Market Snapshot (midday, ~11:30am ET)
Stocks are flat to slightly higher in a cautious, narrow tape ahead of the 2:00pm ET Fed decision, with the market widely expecting rates to hold after September’s hike. The S&P 500 ETF (SPY) is up 0.14% at $770.80, the Dow ETF (DIA) up 0.23% at $524.43, the Nasdaq-100 ETF (QQQ) up 0.04% at $721.53, and the small-cap Russell 2000 ETF (IWM) down 0.08% at $279.97. The VIX has eased to 17.24, down 1.6% from Tuesday’s 17.52 close. The 10-year Treasury yield is back above 5%, at 5.02%.
Breadth is narrow: about 350 stocks are up 4% or more against 213 down 4% or more, advancing and declining issues are near even, and new 52-week highs (131) barely top new lows (107). That compares with a much broader tape at Tuesday’s close, when 6,198 stocks advanced and 3,274 declined.

Rotation Read
Classic worst-to-first rotation. Energy was Tuesday’s worst sector (-2.05%) and is today’s best (+1.02%), powered by a crude spike — WTI up about 2% to $101.75 and Brent at $114.84 after a Houthi attack on Saudi Arabia’s largest refinery. Health Care also flipped from worst to best, going from -0.06% Tuesday to +0.70% today, led by a huge move in Genmab. Meanwhile yesterday’s leaders cooled: Technology went from +1.70% Tuesday to +0.25% today, and Consumer Discretionary from +1.04% to -0.44%. Rate-sensitive Real Estate is today’s laggard (-0.91%) with the 10-year back above 5%. Net read: risk is selective, not broad — energy and health care carry a flat tape into the Fed decision, while defensives and rate-sensitive groups lag. This is a wait-and-see market, not a risk-on one.
