Daily Market Insight – 2026-10-30
Midday snapshot, approx. 11:30 AM–12:00 PM ET, Friday, October 30, 2026. Quotes are intraday and, where noted, 15-minute delayed. Figures from different sources were captured minutes apart, so small differences are timing, not error.
Market snapshot
- SPY (S&P 500): $758.14, -1.46%
- QQQ (Nasdaq 100): $694.20, -2.95% (Finnhub snapshot: $693.62, -3.04%)
- DIA (Dow): $519.35, -0.65%
- IWM (Russell 2000): $279.30, -1.66%
- VIX: ~19.8, up about 15% intraday, vs. a prior close of 17.20 (+1.7% on Oct. 29)
- 10-year Treasury yield: ~4.93–4.94%, down about 5 basis points on the day, after 5.05% on Oct. 28
- Breadth (11:32 AM ET): 384 advancers vs. 601 decliners (39% up, net -217); 58% of stocks above their 200-day average (as of Oct. 29)
The driver is a semiconductor selloff: Intel fell about 28–29% on weak guidance, dragging chips and the Nasdaq with it, while a soft Chicago PMI (55.3 vs. 56.1 expected) added a growth excuse for selling. Oil was the offset, with WTI back above $100 a barrel.

Rotation read
Risk-off, defensive rotation — and it is a continuation, not a one-day flip. Staples, utilities and health care lead while technology craters, a pattern already visible on Oct. 29, when health care (+2.4%) and real estate (+2.2%) led and communication services (-1.9%) and technology (-1.2%) lagged. Energy is the exception to the defensive story: it is up on crude above $100 and on strong Exxon/Chevron results, and it was already up 9.59% from Oct. 1–29. The Dow holding up far better than the Nasdaq (-0.6% vs. about -3%) confirms this is a tech/chip-led flush, not broad capitulation — breadth is negative (39% advancing) but not washed out, and the VIX near 20 is elevated, not panicked.
