Daily Market Insight – 2026-11-02

Stocks bounced on Monday, November 2, 2026, retracing part of Friday’s sharp selloff. The rebound was broad but uneven: consumer and materials names led, energy fell hard on plunging oil, and technology still lagged despite the bounce. Breadth was positive, and volatility eased from Friday’s spike.

Market Snapshot

  • SPY (S&P 500): +0.66% at 7,629.94 as of 11:17 AM ET.
  • QQQ (Nasdaq): +0.81% at 25,643.68 as of 11:17 AM ET; the underlying ETF was +0.53% in a separate midday quote.
  • DIA (Dow): +0.99% at 52,282.84 as of 11:17 AM ET; the Dow rose 403 points to 52,173.40 in an earlier mid-morning update.
  • IWM (Russell 2000): +1.10% to $282.40, versus a $279.33 prior close.
  • VIX: about 18.6, down roughly 4.2% from Friday’s 19.42 close, after spiking 12.91% on Friday.
  • 10-year Treasury yield: 4.91%, down 2 basis points, and 4.917% in a later morning update versus 4.928% on Friday.
  • Breadth: 684 advancers versus 301 decliners (69% up) as of 10:42 AM ET, with 55% of stocks above their 200-day average.

The driver was oil: crude fell about 5.6% to 6.6% on renewed diplomatic efforts, lifting fuel-sensitive consumer names while hammering energy. A 10:00 AM factory survey also helped, with activity at 55.5 versus 54.6 expected and its prices gauge cooling to 75.2 from 77.9.

Rotation Read

Risk-on at the margin, but selective. Friday’s tape was defensive: staples, energy and health care led while technology fell 4.9% and the broader market dropped. Monday flipped the energy leg — energy went from Friday’s leader (+1.91%) to today’s clear laggard — while consumer discretionary and materials took the lead. That is a bounce led by cyclicals and rate-sensitive names, not a return to technology leadership: technology remains near the bottom despite the index rebound, extending its weak October run. Financials and industrials joining the leaders supports a broadening bounce; energy’s drop and technology’s lag argue against calling this a clean all-clear.
