Daily Market Insight – 2026-11-06

Stocks bounced at midday on Friday, November 6, 2026, recovering part of Thursday’s rout as a stronger-than-expected October jobs report and dip-buying in chipmakers lifted the tape. The rebound is broad but partial: the Nasdaq is retracing only about a third of Thursday’s 6%+ drop, and the Dow is still lower on the day.

Market Snapshot

  • SPY (S&P 500 ETF): +0.89% — recovering after Thursday’s 4.36% slide to 7,353.73.
  • QQQ (Nasdaq 100 ETF): +2.11% to $660.71 — bouncing after Thursday’s 6.31% drop; still only about a third of the way back.
  • DIA (Dow ETF): -0.42% — the only major index ETF still lower, with the Dow at a 4-week low.
  • IWM (Russell 2000 ETF): +1.17% to $274.15 — small caps joining the bounce after Thursday’s 4.45% fall.
  • VIX: ~24.9, down about 12% from Thursday’s close of 28.18, when it had surged 69.7% in a single session. Still elevated, and the term structure remains in backwardation — stress has eased, not cleared.
  • 10-year Treasury yield: ~4.88%, up about 4 basis points from Thursday’s 4.84% close, after the hot jobs report lifted December Fed hike odds to roughly 78%.
  • Jobs report: October nonfarm payrolls rose 165,000, well above the 70,000 expected and the biggest increase in 7 months; unemployment ticked down to 4.1% and wages rose 3.1% year over year.
  • Breadth: advance/decline data was not available at post time. Thursday’s selloff came on heavy volume — 26.9 billion shares traded vs. a 20-session average of 17.7 billion — and utilities ETF volume was running above average this morning.

Rotation Read

Risk-on, but only in the sense of a relief bounce. Technology leads by a wide margin after leading Thursday’s rout — a textbook dip-buy in the hardest-hit sector, with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) up over 5% after falling 12.2% on Thursday. Communication services is second, riding the same growth rebound. The telling move is at the bottom: consumer staples, which held up best on Thursday (-0.75%), is today’s worst sector — money rotating out of safety and back into growth. The bounce is partial, though: XLK is still down roughly 6% over the two sessions, the VIX sits near 25 with the curve in backwardation, and yields ticked higher on the jobs beat, which argues the market is buying the dip, not yet calling the all-clear.
