Daily Market Insight – 2026-10-19

Market Snapshot (midday, ~12pm ET)

  • SPY: ~767.70, +0.57%
  • QQQ: 723.46, +1.92%

Technology is doing the heavy lifting today. The Nasdaq-100 is outperforming the broader market by more than three-to-one, and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index looks set to end an eight-session losing streak. Fear is draining fast: the VIX is down nearly 12% from Friday’s 19.99 close.

Rotation Read

This is a straight reversal of Friday’s tape. On Friday, XLK, XLC, and XLY fell 2.5%, 2.5%, and 1.2% while energy (XLE) jumped 2.5% and utilities bid up on Middle East headlines and elevated oil prices. Today that defensive bid is unwinding: XLE, XLU, and XLRE all trail, while battered tech and discretionary snap back.

The rebound is narrow, though. Yahoo reported chip stocks recovered nearly $250 billion in market capitalization while “most of Wall Street’s stocks were falling.” Only growth is working; everything else is flat to lower. Risk-on rotation back into tech — but on thin breadth.

Context

Last week the Nasdaq-100 posted its worst week since the April 2025 tariff turmoil, and the SOX semiconductor index fell eight sessions straight, wiping roughly $2 trillion in market value. Monday’s bounce follows JPMorgan’s Intel upgrade, Goldman Sachs upgrading CoreWeave to Buy, and slightly lower Treasury yields. Brent crude remains elevated near $108-110 on Middle East supply disruption (Jeddah explosions, Bab el-Mandeb shipping attacks), and the 10-year sits at 5.07% — elevated, but easing. Earnings season accelerates this week: Netflix reports Tuesday, Meta and Tesla Wednesday after the bell.
