Daily Market Insight – 2026-11-04

Stocks rallied broadly into midday on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, after a Democratic sweep in the midterm elections. The Dow led, volatility collapsed, and Treasury yields slipped — but the leadership rotated away from chips and AI-infrastructure names toward consumer, communication-services, and old-economy stocks.

Market Snapshot

  • SPY (S&P 500): +1.44% at $765.23 as of 11:10 AM ET
  • QQQ (Nasdaq 100): +1.69% at $696.83 in late-morning trading
  • DIA (Dow 30): +2.51% at $530.04 as of 10:52 AM ET
  • IWM (Russell 2000): +1.60% at $284.28
  • VIX: ~18.3, down roughly 12% from Tuesday’s close of 20.83
  • 10-year Treasury yield: ~4.91%, down about 3 basis points on the session
  • Breadth: 720 advancers vs. 266 decliners (73% up) as of 9:42 AM ET; 56% of stocks above their 200-day average

The rally is broad, not narrow: nearly three-quarters of stocks were higher in the morning, and the fear gauge’s double-digit drop signals election uncertainty coming out of the market.

Rotation Read

Risk-on, but with a clear rotation. The prior session (November 3) was led by technology (+1.44%) while staples (-1.79%) and materials (-1.72%) lagged. Today that flipped: discretionary and communication services lead, yesterday’s laggards (staples, materials, real estate, health care) all rebound more than 2%, and technology lags at just +0.83%. Energy is the outlier, plunging 5.56% as crude oil slid roughly 3%. In short: money is rotating out of the AI/chip trade and into consumer-facing mega-caps and defensive rebounders, while falling yields and a collapsing VIX support the broad tape.
